kenya — safaricom begins 3g and 3.5g tests
Kenya’s largest cellco Safaricom has announced plans to deploy a trial HSDPA 3.5G network in the capital city Nairobi. The trial will run for twelve months, offering users speeds of up to 1.8Mbps, and will run alongside a trial of a W-CDMA 3G system, which is also being conducted in the city. Safaricom’s CEO Michael Joseph told the East African Standard: ‘I don't believe at this point that we are going to have a national roll out. It will be to only selected areas where we think the business can be justified.’ He added that the cellco will apply for a 3G licence only when it can see a clear business case for 3G and 3.5G services.
