switzerland — sole candidate for universal service
Swisscom is the only company to have put itself forward to be the provider of universal services, once its current mandate comes to an end at the end of this year. Last October the Swiss telecoms regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom), launched a public invitation to tender for the award of the next universal service licence. Swisscom, which is the incumbent, was the only firm to submit an offer, with all other interested companies declining to participate. The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) will now examine Swisscom's candidature dossier and submit a proposal for a decision to ComCom. ComCom must designate the new universal service licensee by 30 June 2007 at the latest. The new licence will come into effect on 1 January 2008.
