bangladesh — spice looking for share in bangladeshi market
Regional Indian cellco Spice Communications is aiming to buy a stake in one of Bangladesh’s GSM operators, and says it has initiated talks with potential targets in cooperation with its 49%-owner Telekom Malaysia. Spice, majority-owned by Indian firm MCorp Global, is also believed to have appointed an advisor to shortlist possible acquisitions in the neighbouring country. Spice has not named the companies it has spoken to, but its chairman, B K Modi, confirmed that: ‘We are looking at expanding our presence [into] Bangladesh as we feel that there is lot of potential for telephony growth in that country. The country is emerging as a major player in mobile communications and we are looking at setting up brownfield operations.’ Spice had 2.45 million GSM subscribers in the Punjab and Karnataka telecoms circles at the end of 2006.
