bangladesh — voip equipment seized from aktel office

Bangladeshi government agents yesterday confiscated equipment allegedly used for operating voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) services illegally from the head office of mobile network operator Telecom Malaysia International Bangladesh (AKTEL). The seized equipment includes STMs, softswitches and IP gateways. No members of AKTEL staff were arrested. Talking to local journalists, Major Joha of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) intelligence wing claimed that the facilities had been used for illegal VoIP operations by five companies – Future Data Network, Brothers International, Orbitar Technologies, Sun Trading and Islam & Brothers. ‘No individual alone in AKTEL is responsible for the illegal business, but the whole company. So, we shall file the case against the company,’ Major Joha said, adding that ‘what matters is not the price of the equipment but the revenue the government has been deprived of so far.’ The raid was part of an ongoing drive against VoIP businesses that infringe the 2001 Telecommunications Act 2001; the RAB began clamping down on VoIP centres in Dhaka in December last year.
