vietnam — aircom wins gsm job in vietnam

UK vendor Aircom International has won a contract with Vietnamese cellco Vinaphone, to provide network planning and design to assist with the expansion of its GSM infrastructure. Vinaphone is expanding its existing GSM network to boost subscriber numbers and provide service coverage to all districts through the installation of an extra 5,000 base transceiver stations (BTS). Aircom will be working at a total of 1,212 sites in 27 provinces. No financial details were given. With Aircom’s support, Vinaphone wants to have some 9,000 optimised BTSs installed on its network by the end of the year. Vinaphone ended 2007 with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, placing it third in the market with an approximate 24% share. However, accurate customer numbers in Vietnam’s burgeoning mobile arena have historically been notoriously difficult to pin down.
