russia — svyazinvest reports 88.6% increase in profits

Russia’s Svyazinvest group has reported an 88.6% jump in net profits for 2007 to RUB36.9 billion (USD1.6 billion). Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) reached RUB87.9 billion, while revenues were up 12% at RUB244 billion. State-backed Svyazinvest has stakes in Russia’s seven mega-regional wireline operators plus national long-distance operator Rostelecom.

Rostelecom is a telecommunications services provider and carrier of domestic long distance (DLD) and international long distance (ILD) traffic in the Russian Federation. The Company owns and operates a trunk telecommunications network and carry the bulk of Russia's long-distance and international traffic. The Company renders domestic and international long-distance telecommunications services to end users and provides traffic throughput services to Russian operators, including each of Russia's seven Internet-ready computer systems (IRCs) and alternative operators. In addition, the Company provides telecommunications services to various government entities across Russia and ensures the operation of the ground-based network of most television and radio broadcasting channels. Its trunk network, which transmits a majority of Russia's domestic and international long-distance traffic, comprises of nearly 145,000 kilometers of digital and analog lines.

Telecommunication Investment Joint Stock Company (Svyazinvest) is one of the largest telecom holding companies in the world. Its charter capital was formed by consolidation of shares owned by the federal government in regional telecom operators, set up in the process of telecom sector privatization. Svyazinvest incorporates 7 large mega-regional telecom operators, OJSC Giprosvyaz and OJSC Rostelecom, the national domestic long-distance and international operator. Svyazinvest' network covers nearly the whole of Russia and its capacity makes up over 90% of the total country`s capacity. The holding company`s subsidiaries operate public telephone networks which installed capacity is over 31,7 million telephone lines (of January 1, 2007). The company' subsidiaries have licenses for provision of local, domestic long-distance and international telephone services, data transmission, etc. They also provide ISDN services, wireless subscriber access and mobile services.
