india — 3g policy almost finalised

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is reported to have finalised plans for the introduction of 3G services. DoT has decided to allow international firms to bid for licences, contrasting with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) opinion to only allow bids from domestic firms. A reserve price of INR22.6 billion (USD521.7 million), double the reserve recommended by TRAI, has been fixed for those companies wishing to participate in the auction. The policy now must be cleared by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the final step towards implementation.
