colombia — telefonica launches 16mbps broadband service
Colombian fixed line operator Telefonica Telecom has launched a broadband service to residents of Bogota offering download speeds of up to 16Mbps, the company said in a statement. The connection is being offered as part of a triple-play package, which includes unlimited local fixed line calls and satellite TV services, for COP354,000 (USD185) a month. The company has also launched 2Mbps broadband access to customers in Barranquilla, Cali, Cartagena, Neiva Ibague, Cucuta and Pasto for COP 112,000 per month.

Formerly known as Colombia Telecomunicaciones, the Bogotá-based company was reborn in August 2003 as Colombia Telecommunicaciones. In April 2006, Spain's Telefónica acquired a majority stake in the Colombian operater with ownership of 50% of outstanding shares plus one, and now operates as Telefónica Telecom. Telecom provides local, long distance, internet and added-value services to individual and corporate clients.
