macedonia — implementation of mnp uncertain

The proposed implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) in Macedonia, which was due to take effect from 16 July, has been thrown into question after the country’s two largest cellcos reportedly moved to postpone its adoption. Local news service A1 writes that only VIP Mobile, the country’s smallest operator, has endorsed the proposals and said it is ready to offer the service in two weeks’ time. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that T-Mobile and Cosmofon are trying to postpone offering the service for as long as possible, due to concerns its will adversely impact subscriber numbers. Macedonia was home to more than two million mobile users at the end of March 2008, of which the big two controlled more than 91%.
