usa — extended deadline for comments on aws-band auction

Following T-Mobile USA’s calls for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to extend the comment period for the regulator’s contentious proposal to auction nationwide spectrum in the AWS band, the FCC has extended the comment and reply comment deadlines from yesterday to 25 July and 11 August respectively. The FCC wants to combine the 2155MHz-2175MHz band with the 2175MHz-2180MHz band to create a new licence referred to as advanced wireless services-3 (AWS-3). Any successful applicant would be required to dedicate 25% of its network capacity to providing a free broadband service, install a network-based internet filtering system to block pornography and allow open access to third-party devices and applications. T-Mobile’s main concern is that the allocation of this spectrum could cause interference to the adjacent spectrum it received as the biggest winner in the AWS-1 auction in 2006.
