france — government calls for sms price cut

The government of France is calling on the country’s mobile operators to cut the cost of SMS services following a study that found that prices charged by the three main operators – Orange France, SFR and Bouygues Telecom – have not fallen much over the past three or four years. Reuters reports that Luc Chatel, France's junior minister responsible for consumer goods and a government spokesman, is writing to the cellcos ‘to make them aware of the difficulties of consumers with low budgets.’ He will also ‘invite’ them to introduce initiatives to cut the price of single SMS messages in the wake of record high inflation in the country which is eroding consumers’ purchasing power.
