usa — t-mobile wants more debate on free wireless service
Cellular operator T-Mobile USA has called on the country’s telecoms regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to rethink its plans to offer spectrum for a free nationwide wireless internet service, Dow Jones reports. The regulator is planning on selling frequencies which would require the winning bidder to roll out a free access network which covers at least 95% of the population. T-Mobile says the free service could cause interference on its own wireless networks, which utilise an adjacent spectrum band. The cellco and other operators which include AT&T also claim that the free offering would damage their businesses, which provide paid-for wireless internet access. The free national wireless network is being backed by a start-up company called M2Z Networks. The sale is unlikely to go ahead before next year, with the regulator still debating the exact conditions for the licence.
