usa — at&t profit up on back of mobile performance

AT&T reported a 30% rise in profit in the second quarter of 2008. Net income increased to USD3.77 billion compared to USD2.9 billion twelve months previously. Revenue rose 4.7% to USD30.87 billion from USD29.48 billion a year ago. The company added 1.3 million new mobile subscribers in the quarter, which made up for the loss of nearly one million fixed line residential customers, and took the total number of wireless subscribers to 72.8 million by 30 June 2008 while switched access lines fell 8% to 58.9 million. The company gained 46,000 new broadband connections and added 170,000 U-verse TV customers in the quarter taking the total number of subscribers to 549,000. AT&T hopes to have one million customers for its IPTV service by the end of 2008.
