south africa — mtn to spend zar1.4bn on fibre network

The South African cellular operator MTN says it is spending ZAR1.4 billion (USD183 million) to deploy a 5,000km fibre optic network in the country. The group, which is rolling out the network in partnership with unnamed firms, hopes to have the network in service by 2010. MTN says the network will cut its transmission costs by ZAR6.3 billion over ten years, Reuters reports.
