malaysia — p1 launches wimax network in klang valley

Packet One (P1) Networks has announced the launch of its WiMAX (802.16e) network using the 2.3GHz band in the Klang Valley. P1 was originally expected to launch services in June, but delayed commercial operations after it opted to extend user trials. Pilots were conducted in the Klang Valley suburbs of Subang, Sentul, Setapak and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) area and covered both business and residential users.

Packet One’s network is expected to comprise 600 base stations by year end, covering 25% of the nation’s population in major cities along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. ‘Next year, we expect to extend the base station network to cover major cities on the east coast of the peninsular. After that, we’ll work with the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission to extend coverage to Sabah and Sarawak,’ said P1 CEO Michael Lai.
